Vietnam's air-conditioned trains are safe, comfortable & inexpensive, the ideal way for independent travellers to get around and see Vietnam at ground level. The train journeys are an experience in themselves, and become an integral part of your visit to Vietnam. You might even meet some Vietnamese people.
WHAT ARE VIETNAM TRAINS LIKE
Air-conditioned trains with sleepers and on-board catering link Hanoi, Hue, Danang, Nha Trang, and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Hoi An has no station, but it's just 30km by bus or taxi from Danang. There are also trains from Hanoi to Halong & Haiphong (for HalongBay) and Hanoi to Lao Cai (for Sapa)
HANOI - SAPA LUXURY TRAIN

If you want to head for the hills at Sapa, take the train from Hanoi to Lao Cai.  Sapa has no railway station, but it's about 40km from Lao Cai rail station and easily reached from there by tourist bus, jeep or hired motorbike.  There are both daytime and overnight sleeper trains between Hanoi & Lao Cai. But overnight trains are preferred because it saves time and two nights of accommodations.

 

 

 

 
 
 
SAIGON - NHA TRANG LUXURY TRAIN

HANOI - BEIJING INTERNATIONAL TRAIN

There is a safe and comfortable twice-weekly train service between Beijing & Hanoi.  A Chinese express train with 4-berth soft class sleepers and restaurant car runs from Beijing to Dong Dang on the Vietnamese frontier (you might need to get off and wait on the platform for an hour or two at Nanning while the train is shunted).  At Dong Dang you pass through customs and passport control and board a connecting Vietnamese metre-gauge train for the final run to Hanoi.
